Gynecomastia corresponds to the excessive development of the male mammary gland, often associated with excess fat. The treatment of gynecomastia gives excellent results. Enlarged breasts in men can have several causes, either congenital due to a condition or intervention on the genitals, or linked to weight gain. Enlargement may involve glandular tissue, fatty tissue, or both

Depending on the origin of the hypertrophy, the surgeon uses a different technique:

Glandular hypertrophy: the surgeon ensures beforehand that all the biological examinations are normal and that no medical treatment is in progress. He removes the gland through a small semi-circular incision located around or through the areola. It leaves a layer of 8 to 10 mm to maintain good vascular and nipple vitality.

Fatty hypertrophy : if there is a lot of fat, the surgery makes an incision under the breast to remove it but it always leaves a subcutaneous thickness of about 1 cm. If there is little fat, he does a simple liposuction.

Glandular and fatty hypertrophy : The surgeon begins by excising the glandular tissue and then performs liposuction. If the skin excess is important, it is sometimes necessary to carry out a remodeling. Finally, the surgeon performs a resection of semi-lunar skin under the areola.

What are the consequences after Gynecomastia?

The postoperative course can be painful for the first few days.
An analgesic treatment will be prescribed for a few days.

The first dressings are removed after 24 hours.

  • A pressure dressing is placed, which the patient keeps for 5 to 8 days, as well as a drain for the first 2 or 3 days if the volume removed is significant. The sutures are removed around the 7th or 8th day.

  • The results are good and visible from the start.

  • The final result of gynecomastia surgery is not observed before 6 months to 1 year, in particular because of the progressive nature of skin retraction. On the other hand, from 3 months, the final result is obtained on the fat volume.

  • The scars around the areola are not visible most often. More rarely, long chest scars in cases of major skin excess are visible, but may be concealed by chest hair.

  • You have to wait at least 12 months to judge the final appearance of the scars.
