Type of facelift:

There are 5 types of facelift:

  1. Cervico-facial lifting, intervention which will allow to treat the lower part of the face, by redrawing the oval of the face and the neck.

  2. Malar lift or centro facial lift, intervention that will treat the middle part of the face. The malar lift acts on the lower eyelids, on the hollows of dark circles, on the cheekbones and the nasolabial fold.

  3. Temporal lifting, intervention that will treat the temples and the outer corner of the eyelids.

  4. Frontal lift, which will put the eyebrows back in place and tighten the skin by reducing forehead wrinkles.

  5. Macs Lift or Soft Lift or mini facelift or even vertical facelift, corrects the oval of the sagging face with moderate relaxation of the neck, it also helps to reshape sagging cheekbones. This facelift is intended for patients with these slackenings, whatever their age.

Interventions can be associated with the facelift such as liposuction of the double chin and jowls or a fat injection to plump the sunken cheeks sagging over time.

Face lifting is often accompanied by a  blepharoplasty  (eyelid surgery)

Scars following a facelift procedure

The incisions are largely hidden by hair, and easily concealed. The skin incision is discreet inside the ear, on the natural line.

In total, the incision begins in the temporal region inside the hairline, either in front of or inside the ear, then goes around the earlobe to end back in the hair.

Cervico-Facial Lift ,  After the incisions mainly in the hair (at the level of the temples and the nape of the neck) and around the ear, we take off under the skin, under the whole skin-subcutaneous fat or under the muscle. We readjust the deep planes and we sometimes tighten the muscular system. Finally, the excess skin is incised.

Malar lift or centro facial lift , incision at the level of the lower eyelid. This incision is located just under the eyelash and it extends into the crow's feet in order to remain as discreet as possible. The surgeon will perform the vertical suspension of the cheekbones using threads. For this, the surgeon will fix the wires to the bony edges of the orbit. Finally, the excess skin is incised.

Temporal lifting , the incision is discreet, hidden in the hairy part of the temple area. The skin is peeled off, tightened, then it is sutured after removing the excess skin.

Frontal lifting, the incision is made in the hair from one ear to the other or at the limit of the implantation (not recommended for bald people). The practitioner peels the skin downwards then cuts the fibers of the frontal muscle and the muscle located between the eyebrows. Then he pulls the skin upwards to smooth it and the excess skin is removed.

MACS Lift or Soft Lift or mini facelift , the scar is short, the incision is located around the ear leaving an almost invisible scar. There is no scar behind the ear. The principle is to achieve minimal detachment under the skin. Three sutures are made  with non-absorbable thread on the muscle in the form of a loop: a first loop tightens the neck, a second the jowls, and the third loop the cheekbone. The skin is then pulled vertically, which avoids having excess skin in the neck.

Like all scars, they are permanent. Their appearance may be red and visible for several months. These scars evolve favorably most often. They must be protected from the sun for about 1 year.

What are the consequences after a facelift?

  • The postoperative course can be painful for the first few days.

  • An analgesic treatment will be prescribed for a few days.

  • The first dressings are removed after 24 hours.

The threads are resorbable, they are resorbed between the 5th and the 15th day, in several stages.

The first shampoo is allowed from the 2nd day. The first session at the hairdresser is allowed after 3 weeks, and the first dyeing after 4-6 weeks.

In a classic and usual way, the weeks and the first months after your facelift, are present:

  • Edema (swelling) of the face. It can be asymmetrical. It fades in the first few weeks, and can sometimes persist for a month or more.

  • Ecchymoses (“bruises”) of the face and neck, often asymmetrical. They persist for a few weeks, at least 15 days.

  • A feeling of uncomfortable tension in the face, especially behind the ears.
Sometimes pain, which is relieved by simple analgesic treatments.

  • A frequent transient decrease in the sensitivity of the cheeks and neck, linked to the surgical procedures (detachment of the skin), which can last several weeks or months.

The period of desocialization after cervico facial lifting is generally 15 days.

The final result of the cervico-facial lift should not be appreciated before 6 months. It takes 12 months to judge the final appearance of the scars.
